25 Years - My Journey as a Wedding Singer and Host in Lancashire

This week marks 25 years since my very first paid gig and to even write that feels surreal. I always loved singing, but I’ll be honest, I never really thought I could make it as a singer. It wasn’t on the agenda. Whatever job I had at the time,  whether it was packing toilet seats, driving a forklift, or looking after people in hospital, I was always singing anyway (and usually getting told off for it!).

Things started to change when I met my mentor, Big Gary. I began going out on the road with him, learning the ropes, watching how he worked a crowd, and soaking it all in.

That’s where the journey began that would eventually see me become a wedding singer and host in Lancashire, performing for couples all over the North West and beyond.

One night when I wasn’t with him, Gary was playing at a little pub called The Moulders Arms in Waterfoot, Rossendale. He mentioned me to the landlady, Christine, and told her about a song I used to sing, Karma Killer by Robbie Williams. They were intrigued, so Gary gave me a ring and said, “Get yourself over here.” So I did exactly that.

After a quick sing, Christine offered me my first ever paid gig. Only problem was… I only knew six songs at the time! She told me to get twenty together and booked me in for Friday 20th October 2000. That was the real beginning of my journey.

Since that night, it’s been one incredible ride, from pub gigs and clubs to castles, Hong Kong, and over a thousand weddings across the North West. Every step, every show, and every couple has helped shape the singer, entertainer, and wedding host I am today.

Cutting My Teeth on the Working Mens Club Scene

Soon after, I auditioned for an agency and got taken on. They sent me everywhere across the North West, pubs, clubs, working men’s venues, every weekend I was out somewhere new.

It was one of the best learning experiences I could’ve asked for. Walking into strange places, figuring out how to win people over, thinking on my feet… that’s where I learned how to really entertain.

I got the back end of the old clubland era, those big, character-filled rooms that still carried the echoes of what they once were. They might not have been as busy as they used to be, but I could still feel the history in them. I wouldn’t want to go back and do it all again, but I look back on it fondly. It built my backbone as a performer.

Finding My Feet as a Wedding Singer and Host in Lancashire

From around 2008 onwards, things began to shift. That was also the year I started performing in Hong Kong for New Year’s Eve, six years in a row from 2008 to 2014. Incredible experiences that I’ll never forget.

At the same time, I started slowly building my own brand back home. It began with a flyer, then a business card, a website, and eventually wedding fairs.

At first, I was just a singer. But over time, I started to realise that couples wanted more than someone who could just sing, they wanted someone who could help guide the day, lift the atmosphere, and bring everyone together.

It took me a bit to find my feet, but once the penny dropped, I leaned into the interactive side of things. It came naturally. That’s when “The Wedding Singer & Host Wayne Farrow” really began to take shape.

Evolving and Growing

Early on, I was heavily influenced by Robbie Williams. Like him, I’m a bit of an introvert-extrovert, quiet off stage, but a completely different person once the mic’s in my hand. I had to learn to embrace that side of me because, in this job, confidence not arrogance sells the performance.

That confidence became the backbone of who I am today as a wedding singer and host in Lancashire, bringing energy, fun, and structure to every couple’s day.

A lesson I learned from my time in the pubs and clubs is that weddings are a completely different world. It’s not just about turning up and singing anymore, it’s about professionalism, planning, and people skills. The wedding industry is a business in its own right, and while it can be competitive and sometimes cut-throat, the key is to focus on your own path, keep your standards high, and stay true to who you are.

There was a time when another act tried to tarnish my name, and to this day still does. At first it hurt, but in the long run, it did me a favour. It taught me to focus on what I do best and to keep pushing forward. I built my reputation the right way, by being reliable, down-to-earth, and consistent. I invested in myself, looked after my clients, and earned trust the only way you can in this business: through honesty, graft, and results.

Lessons Along the Way

One of the biggest lessons I ever learned came during the Hong Kong chapter. When I joined a band, I realised quickly that you can’t sing everything in the original key. The musicians didn’t always appreciate that, and I ended up damaging my voice, struggling for nearly two years after.

Then I met Kate Gavanagh, a brilliant singing teacher who helped me find my voice again. I was worried I’d never get it back, especially as I was transitioning into weddings at the time, but through patience, graft, and stubborn determination, I came back stronger than ever.
My voice actually became better because of that struggle.

The People Who Shaped Me

I’ve been lucky to have great people around me. My mentors, Big Gary and Ian Greenwood, were huge influences. Gary was this towering figure, over six feet tall with long hair, looked like Paul Rodgers from Free, full of charisma and presence. Ian was hilarious, always had me in stitches, and was a proper old-school entertainer.

They saw something in me before I did. When people like that choose to help you, it’s priceless. I took the best bits from both of them and found my own way from there.

Then there’s Jim, my best mate and one of the most genuine people I’ve ever known. I met Jim when I was 14 and he was 62, and we stayed close for the next 24 years. He was like a father figure, a cheerleader, and my navigator (this was before sat-navs, mind you). He came to hundreds of gigs with me, always proud, always honest. His favourite song was Mr Bojangles, and he requested it every single time. I still miss him.

A Proud Dad Moment

One of the proudest moments of my entire career was sharing the stage with my daughter, Mya. She came into the studio one night while I was working and I asked her to sing a bit of Shallow by Lady Gaga with me. She nailed it. I recorded it and put it online, and the response was unreal, it gave her the confidence to sing more.

We went to a studio together where she recorded a few tracks, and eventually, she performed with me at a Valentine’s Ball and even at a wedding. Watching her do her thing, knowing the buzz she was feeling, I can’t put that pride into words. She’s got a natural gift, and I hope she fully embraces it one day.

Stories I still smile about

There was the groom who arrived an hour before the ceremony still a bit worse for wear. During the vows he had to ask the registrar to repeat herself once or twice, and the whole room was in bits. Chaos, but pure comedy, still one of my favourite memories.

Another that stands out is the London church that turned into a nightclub. I did a twenty-hour round trip for it, and it was worth every mile. The bride, an author and influencer, and the groom, a rugby player, were up for a party from the word go.
My lasting memory is me up in the pulpit belting out a 90s club tune while the whole place went off. Unreal scenes.

And then there was the wedding where I clocked who was in the crowd, the London Cabaret Club crew, a singer touring with Jess Glynne, another with a huge Instagram following, the bride a West End dancer, and the groom a former singer, plus a few faces from Hollyoaks in the mix. No pressure, right? I absolutely nailed it. The room was bouncing, everyone said it was the best wedding they’d ever been to, and I loved every minute of it. When the pressure’s on, that’s when I come alive.

Moments like these remind me why I still love what I do. Every wedding brings its own stories, its own characters, and its own energy and after all these years, that buzz has never gone away.

Looking Back

It’s been an incredible 25 years. I was meant to go to St Martins College to study mental health, but I took a chance and followed a completely different path. It hasn’t always been easy, but I’ve never regretted it.

I’ve sung in pubs, clubs, castles, and churches and been whisked away to Hong Kong, I’ve worked with amazing people, entertained thousands, and built something that means a lot to me.

What I’ve learned most is this, be humble, help others, keep learning, and never lose sight of who you are. Every gig, every couple, every laugh and every setback has made me the performer I am today.

After twenty-five years as a wedding singer and host in Lancashire, I still get that same buzz every time I walk into a room, mic in hand, knowing I’m about to help make someone’s biggest day even better.
