Wedding Cake Ideas

Traditional or contemporary? Buttercream or Fondant? Round or square? Chocolate or fruit? Covered or naked? Choices, choices, choices; Cakes, cakes, cakes! – the options for your wedding cake are absolutely endless, so this is your chance to let your creativity loose and come up with something really personal for you and your spouse-to- be. As a wedding singer I come across a lot of wedding cakes and I always enjoy seeing the varied designs (and tasting them too!).

Once upon a time a traditional tiered fruit cake with marzipan and royal icing placed on a white table cloth was the only way to go, those days are gone. Some of the current trends range from simple to extravagant.

Loads of bride decide on having enough individual cupcakes topped with delicious buttercream and glitter for all the guests rather than one big cake, or you could go for a naked cake (un-iced) placed on a tree trunk block surrounded by foliage and flowers, or what about a cheesecake with a crumbly delicious biscuit base…or even a cake made of cheese?

With the country’s passion for The Great British Bake-Off at an all-time high the chances are you will know someone who is a master baker so if you’re on a budget why not let them showcase their talent if they’re willing. It’s also a great idea to have a look at the local high street bakeries to see if they could create you something tasty and special for your focal point at your wedding. But if it’s the wow factor you’re going for then choosing a specialised wedding cake maker is the way to go. They may be a little more expensive, but you know you will be getting a professional service with a fabulous creation at the end of it.

Have a look at some of my favourites from recent weddings: Yes that is a pork pie cake – see you don’t have to follow the rules – you can make your own up!

Have fun choosing.
